Greetings from Vitaly Saveliev, General Director of PJSC "Aeroflot – Russian Airlines"

Dear Passenger,

Welcome aboard this Aeroflot aircraft.

Spring has arrived, which brings a time rich in joyful and exciting events. Colours and smiles are March’s calling card.

Let our mothers and wives, sisters and daughters, all be happy and loved! We appreciate your attention and your concern, and always remember that the larger share of domestic and child-rearing duties traditionally fall on your shoulders. Please accept our sincere and heartfelt congratulations on International Women’s Day!

I am particularly pleased to be writing this because almost 12,000 employees of Aeroflot — the larger and without any doubt more impressive part of our staff — are women. Conscientious and responsible, talented and responsive, stylish and charming, they work across all parts of the company: in managerial positions, as pilots, providing ground services, and of course making your journey as comfortable as possible on board. In large part it is their hard work, day in day out, that has created Aeroflot, its potential and its business reputation.

This year we celebrate a landmark, as our company reaches its 95th anniversary. We even know its exact date of birth: 17 March 1923, when the Dobrolet Russian Voluntary Air Fleet Company was founded. Dobrolet was the predecessor of the world-famous Soviet carrier. From its very beginning, Aeroflot served the interests of our country. Pilots flew highly challenging flights using unfinished planes, often without appropriate ground support, trying honourably to accomplish the mission they had been given of connecting the regions and cities of this huge state in a single, unified transport network.

Read all...

Over time, the story of our company proved inextricably linked with the life of the country. Aeroflot was at the foundation of Russian civil aviation industry, and over many decades worked to develop air transportation and mastered the new technologies developed by legendary Soviet aircraft builders. In the 21st century we are continuing these traditions. In 2011 we began operating the new Russian-built regional aircraft, the SSJ 100, and in the next few years will increase the number of this aircraft type in our fleet to 50.

Soon our fleet will welcome another addition — the latest Russian-built aircraft, which utilizes cutting-edge technology in its design and construction. In 2020 Aeroflot’s first MC-21 will take to the skies, and by 2026 Aeroflot will operate up to 50 of these aircraft on both domestic and international routes.

In view of the company’s plans to continue developing as a leader in terms of digitalisation, the new aircraft will be equipped to offer WiFi internet access from day one.

This month also sees another notable event, with the presidential election taking place on 18 March. The vote will set the country’s course for the next several years. I believe that everyone with an interest in the future of our nation will go to the voting booth and make their choice in favour of a strong and dynamically developing Russia.

We need a country where every person is able to apply their talents; a country in which people want to live and make the world around them better; a country that we are not ashamed to pass on to our children. I am convinced that together we can achieve these goals.

As always, I welcome your suggestions and comments by email at [email protected] can also follow me on Twitter at @v_saveliev.

Fly Aeroflot — the airline that is proud of its rich heritage and looks ahead to the future!

AEROFLOT

On March, 1923 the open joint-stock company Dobrolyet (Russian Society for Voluntary Air Fleet) was established. The main goal of this commercial organisation was to develop civil aviation in the country to boost the national economy. Aeroflot, the successor of Dobrolyet, regards this year as its first birthday. 2018 is a big year for the company as Aeroflot is celebrating 95th anniversary — that’s five years short of a century! February also sees Russia rejoice in Maslenitsa celebrated during the last week before Great Lent — which means loads of bliny and loads of traditional rituals and partying. The thought alone of traversing the jaw-dropping Manpupunyor Plateau rock formations in the Komi Republic is enough to work off those pancakes, luckily we go there for you. We also look at the man behind The Method, Konstantin Stanislavsky, and trace the patterns of magnificent Vologda lace.

Defender of The Fatherland Day takes places on February 23 so prepare for parades in honour of veterans through the Russian cities and capitals. There’s also International Women’s Day to look forward to on March 8, the holiday when Russian beauties hit the town and look even more stunning.

Celebrate the new spring and discover Russia with Aeroflot!

In the March issue of Aeroflot magazine we will tell our readers about the most interesting sporting and cultural events of the upcoming month, as well as new books and films. Actress Svetlana Ustinova reveals what kind of responsibility comes with a run of good luck, musician Artyom Dervoed explains why some modern composers create music exclusively for him, and director Alexey German Jr. speaks about his new film “Dovlatov”, which chronicles a few days in the life of the cult author.

Our Travel section will explain why you’d want to go to an old mining town deep in the woods of Norway, where you can find the Land's End and how you can catch the awakened Sleeping Beauty on your way there, as well as what delicacies you can treat yourself to during the breaks between heli-skiing sessions in Kamchatka, not to mention which traditional Spanish holiday you should opt for if you’d like to see a truly large-scale spectacle.

In the run-up to the most important sports event of the year, we keep on featuring the Russian cities that will be stricken by football fever this summer. This time, we are proud to present our mini-guides to Nizhny Novgorod, Kaliningrad, and Ekaterinburg, that are all preparing to host matches of the FIFA World Cup.

Ingredients are everything: Moscow’s restaurateurs are increasingly relying on in-house food production and are setting up farms, cheese dairies, and sausage-making shops. Meanwhile, they revive old varieties of garlic, raise Nubian goats, and try proving that a hot dog can make for a gourmet meal, too.

or our Reading section, we’ve picked an excerpt from the memoirs of Azari Plisetsky, describing the unforgettable years this outstanding dancer, ballet teacher, and choreographer spent in Cuba as he was creating a ballet school there, working side-by-side with Alicia Alonso and occasionally crossing paths with Fidel Castro.

Among February’s exclusive material — a photo diary of the gastronomic festival Ikra and the culinary glossary of Georgian cuisine.

For admirers of slow reading and long-haul flights, we offer dedicated materials for reading: the rubric “Science” — three questions about quantum bonds, the biography of the Russian Enlightenment thinker and creator of the non-Euclidean geometry, Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky and excerpts of a new book by art historian and executive director of the Sotherby’s auction house Philip Hook, called “Rogues’ Gallery”.

Aeroflot History | Aeroflot

February 9, 1923, is considered the official birth date of Russian civil aviation, when the Labour and Defence Council issued a resolution entitled "On empowering the Central Air Fleet Administration to handle technical supervision over airlines and on founding the Civil Aviation Council.»

Following this resolution on March 17, 1923 open joint stock “DOBROLET” (The Russian Society for Voluntary Air Fleet) was established. The main goal of this commercial organization was to develop the civil aviation in the country for the needs of national economy. From exactly this day Aeroflot, as the successor of DOBOROLET, counts its history.

In the 1920s, after the end of World War I, European countries increasingly used aviation for peaceful purposes; transporting passengers, mail and cargo. Russia kept pace with its neighbours with flights abroad, generally operated using re-equipped warplanes.

On May 1, 1922, flights on the first international route — Moscow-Konigsberg (part of Germany at that time) — were launched and later extended to include Berlin. July 15, 1923, marked the introduction of the first regular domestic route between Moscow and Nizhny NovgorodOn February 25, 1932, the Central Administration of the Civil Air Fleet was founded and “Aeroflot” was adapted as the official abbreviation of the country’s civil aviation service.

In 1956 Aeroflot launched the world’s first jet, the TU-104, to operate on Russia’s domestic and international routes.

In August 1959, Sheremetyevo Airport was opened with the primary task of accommodating international flights.

In the late 1950s, the TU-114, the world’s largest aircraft equipped with more efficient turbo-prop engines, underwent rigorous testing and was put into commercial operation by Aeroflot.

In January 1971, the Aeroflot Central Administration of International Air Traffic was established within the framework of the International Airline Transportation Administration, and became the industry’s sole enterprise authorized to operate international flights. Abroad the airline was known as “Aeroflot Soviet Airlines”

In 1980, Aeroflot was named the general carrier of participants in the XXII Olympic Games held in Moscow. A new international airport, Sheremetyevo 2, capable of simultaneously handling 31 aircraft of any type, was constructed in order to welcome athletes and guests to the capital from all over the world. The official opening ceremony was held on May 6.

In 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, former Soviet republics and regions in Russia began founding their own airline companies. Our company was the successor to the Aeroflot name and trademark of the former Soviet air carrier. In June of that year, the “Aeroflot Soviet Airlines” Commercial Production Alliance was created, which was transformed into the open stock company “Aeroflot Russian International Airlines” on July 28, 1992. At the same time, the airline began operating foreign aircraft. The first foreign aircraft to appear at Aeroflot were the leased A310-300 manufactured by Airbus Industry. Two years later, the company acquired Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, which adhere to the highest ecological and noise standards.

In 1994, the airline acquired Russian-made third generation Il-96-300 aircraft for international flights, which fully adhere to the noise standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization. In late 1995, the airline leased the DC-10-30F long-haul freight carrier.
