PIPELINE INSPECTION

R. М. Shakirov. To provide operating reliability — a major task set up within pipelines

G. А. Giller, L. Yu. Mogilner. Pipeline inspection and diagnostics

The survey covers main techniques and instruments used for quality control and diagnostics of gas, oil and mineral oil magistral pipelines. The need for the complex approach, when the application of several techniques allows detecting and localizing defects in big-extension pipelines and minimizing the volume of inspection work, is marked.

А. S. Annenkov et al. Operative ultrasonic inspection of pipelines

Productivity and reliability of ultrasonic inspection of pipelines can be increased by application of the small-sized devices with a multichannel flaw detector and multielement acoustic systems, and also by using express diagnostic techniques and specialised converters.

C. Collins. High definition X-ray inspection of oil and gas pipelines

The most widely used, reliable and time-proven method of non-destructive weld examination during pipeline construction is radiography. Two alternative on-site radiography methods are available for pipelines of nominal diameter above 150 mm (6 inches), namely the External and Internal techniques. The author draws attention to the Internal radiography with the pipeline X-ray crawler detailing its advantages.

B. Brodsky, Z. Martinek, S. Starman. The VIZUS 2000 System for the inspection of pipe welded joints

The article contains the description of the ultrasonic VIZUS 2000 System for in-field inspection of welded joints. VIZUS 2000 is a multichannel system of high efficiency and reliability. Independent channels allow giving 40 - 70 impulses to each millimeter of the weld instead of 5 - 10 impulses for a multiplexer system. The classic impulse method, TOFD, as well as the spectral method are used for on-line signal processing.

NDT in the UK

P. J. Mudge. A review of the industry

R. Shipp. NDT in the electricity supply industry

The Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) has made a very substantial contribution to the development of NDT in the UK. Many of the features we now know in the heavy industrial NDT sector have resulted from development work, initiatives and problem solving arising from the ESI. The work was fuelled by a large power station building programme and a nationalised industry which placed great store in science, engineering and technology. But a great change came in the mid-1980s. An economic recession stopped the plant building programme and privatisation split the industry. The ESI is now having to learn to live in a new world. This paper gives a brief history of these events, describes the current situation within the ESI and reviews future challenges.

T. McNulty. NDT in the UK petrochemical industry

The paper describes the role of NDT and Inspection in the UK's petro-chemical industry. The two principal NDT technician Certification Schemes used in the UK are the British PCN scheme and the American ASNT scheme. Conventional NDT is widely used for weld inspection and corrosion detection. The intrinsically safe isotope exposure device known as SCAR (Small Control Area Radiography) is described. The use of non-invasive and on-line NDT techniques is becoming important as operational and cost benefits for plant owners become more obvious. Often these techniques are aimed at the rapid screening of pipework for the detection of Corrosion under Insulation (CUI). The Long Range Ultrasonic Testing (LRUT) technique is described. This technique provides a testing method for buried, thermally insulated or otherwise inaccessible pipe, over a range of many tens of metres. The technique is quick, easy to apply and will detect pipe wall cross sectional metal loss of 10% or better. The use of Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT's), Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD), AC Field Measurement (ACFM) and inspection software databases are also briefly described.

P. W. Hills. Condition management review

This article is a brief review of the prime methods and an outline of some of the services and Research in UK industry concerning Condition Management. Members of the COMADIT Group, the Condition Management committee of BINDT has made contributions based on their specific areas of interest inter alia. It is a timely review as we commence the 21st Century and hope it sets the scene for the millennium. The topics covered are not intended to be exhaustive and any key omissions are regretted; the subjects are as follows: Condition Management; Vibration; MIMOSA; Acoustic Emission; Thermography; Oil Debris Analysis & Services; Corrosion Monitoring; Education, R&D, Projects; Training & Certification; Organisations, Publications & Conferences.

A. Vajpayee. Detection of Internal and External Pits from Outside of a Pipe with New Technology.

In-line inspection tools are commonly used to detect and locate pitting on pipelines with high accuracy; however, after excavation it is not always known exactly where the pitted area is located. External coatings must be removed and the pipe cleaned down to bare metal with sand-blast or other techniques, so that supplemental NDT techniques can be employed to locate the pitting and confirm its dimensions prior to repairs. A new technology has been developed, with industry support, to locate pits through coatings and deposits. Pit depths and remaining wall thickness can be sized, and pitted areas can be mapped out. Where access is provided to the inside of the pipe, a second (internal) tool, using the same multi-channel technology, can be used to scan up to 100 meters from the access point .

Digital Radiography

A. A. Maiorov. Digital Technologies in the Radiation Inspection.

New digital technologies of radiation inspection – such as computed radiography with multiuse imaging plates and digital radiography on the basis of digital flat panel detector systems, are considered in detail. These technologies are compared with traditional film technology. The most important image quality and informativity parameters of different technologies are discussed. It is shown that computed radiography systems can provide better image quality than that of film systems, and it is attested that in most cases this technology can fully replace film.
